Living in Cork
Cork City is located on the South West coast of Ireland and is the second largest city in the Republic of Ireland. Founded by St Finbarr over 1,000 years ago, originally a trading merchant hub, Cork has developed into a cosmopolitan vibrant 21st century city of today. Surrounded by the river Lee, north and south banks are connected by several bridges which add to its character. According to the 2002 census, the population of Cork city and county is 447,829.
Proud of its maritime history and deepest natural harbour in Ireland, Cork is connected by direct ferry crossings to UK and mainland Europe. Cork International Airport has direct flights to the UK and parts of Europe and connecting flights to other European and American destinations.
Cork is a university city with a total student population in excess of 25,000. The city has two established third level education institutes - University College Cork and Cork Institute of Technology.
Several strategic advantages continue to be translated into further opportunities for growth and development. The city has a thriving commercial, social and cultural sector.
The city's balanced economy has attracted several major companies to the area. Manufacturing, especially electronics, telecommunications, ICT and Health, Pharmaceutical are located in the greater Cork area. The services sector is also well established.
Cork city has strong commitment to the Arts and cultural life is bountiful. The city is proud of its galleries, museums, The National Sculpture Factory, dance Theatres and artist workshops. The city also boasts an annual calendar of events and festivals ranging from folk, jazz, choral and film. In recognition of this commitment Cork City was nominated European Capital of Culture 2005.
The overall quality of life and physical environment of Cork city and its hinterland is excellent and is readily accessible to residents and visitors. This is evident in the public parks, rivers, lakes, tourist attractions, sports and recreational facilities available along with many cultural and heritage attractions.
